Help Me Go to Camp & Prader-Willi Syndrome
Donation protected
Hi Everyone,
My name is Brooke Burns and I am 13 yrs old. I was born with Prader Willi- Syndrome (PWS). PWS is a rare genetic disorder that occurs in 1:15,000 lives. It equally affects all races and ethnicities. It is the most common genetic cause of life-threatening childhood obesity. Some of the hallmark characteristics are an insatiable hunger often leading to obesity and co-morbid conditions, intellectual disabilities and low muscle tone contributing to obesity and a higher incidence of scoliosis as well as autism spectrum disorder. There is a lot of research going on in the PWS community, there is no cure or treatments.
COVID has made this past year more isolating and difficult for me with school and things I like to do as well as my other friends with PWS. Activities and opportunities have also gone away.
I am writing to ask you or your organization to help me raise money to attend the Latham Centers SummerTide Program this summer.
About the Latham Centers
"Latham Centers is internationally renowned in the care of children and adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Their unique programs encompass a children’s campus (Latham School), and numerous adult group residences and supported community living settings throughout Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts. Latham Centers is a food-safe environment with a dedicated, highly trained staff. Latham School, a residential program for students ages 8 to 22, provides special education tailored to the needs of students with PWS and other complex intellectual and behavioral needs. In our therapeutic, home-like setting and culture of belonging, students receive individualized care from a supportive team of teachers, counselors, clinicians, and nurses. Due to our food-secure and structured environment, students with PWS have shown reduced anxiety around transitions, meal times, community outings, and educational activities. For 50 years, Latham Centers’ mission-driven work has created brighter futures for individuals with disabilities."
I am looking for the chance to work on my skills of independence while being in an environment I feel supported and happy. Also learning behaviors that can help me in the future managing food , making healthy food choices, regular exercise, and coping strategies.
I am asking for your support through a donation to my Go Fund Me Page. I know people get a lot of requests for support, but I am really excited about this chance.
I am also including more information on the Latham Centers and it’s amazing SummerTide Program.
All money raised will go to support the summer program tuition and donations to the Latham Center.
Thank you,
Brooke Burns
