Support Britten's Journey to Recovery

Donation protected

In 2012 Britten Schenk was hit by a bus while serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the São Paulo Brazil mission. This changed his life forever. From that tragic injury he had to start from the ground up in relearning how to walk, talk and start over completely. After 9 months of physical therapy, 3.5 years of speech therapy and a few months of occupational therapy, he was able to relearn many skills that we all take for granted in living our everyday lives independently. He is such a fighter and defied the odds and was able to do things doctors said he wouldn't ever be able to do!

Britten was able to get married and have a beautiful family with an amazing wife and 2 sweet little girls! After his accident in 2012 they were hoping he would survive, what a dream come true this is to be a dad and husband!
Although he has beat the odds in so many aspects of his life, he still struggles with many affects from his accident on a daily basis.

Along with being considered legally blind due to only having partial vision in his left eye and completely blind in his right, another major side effect from his accident is having seizures. While his seizures have been well controlled with medication, He recently experienced a massive breakthrough seizure while they were waiting to fly home from Texas after a family vacation. This seizure left Britten intubated and in the ICU for 4 days and in the hospital for over a week. Because Britten has a severe traumatic brain injury from his accident, this seizure has greatly affected his brain.

From this most recent seizure, he is slow at processing what people are saying and communicating his thoughts, his brain gets tired quickly and needs help with daily functions, and he will likely need physical therapy and speech therapy for a time once he gets home to help him regain many of those everyday life skills again. He will also need to meet with Doctors and Specialists over the coming months to help him make a full recovery and get him back to being able to function independently again.

In 2023 Britten was part of a company wide lay off and despite his best efforts hasn't been able to find a job to fit his family's needs His wife, Alisa has been providing for their family by working full time at the hospital, doing photography, working as a doula, and doing other side jobs. Britten has been taking care of their two young children when Alisa is working. He is such a wonderful husband and father! In the coming months Britten will have a long road of recovery and will need extra support on a daily basis to help him heal, perform daily tasks and help his brain rest.

In this state, he is unable to care for their children so Alisa can't to go to work as he himself needs daily care. Alisa will need to take an unpaid intermittent leave of absence from her work to take care of him and their two young girls. Aside from their daily needs being met, they were out of state when he experienced this most recent massive seizure, and it is unsure how much the emergency, intensive care unit, and hospital stay will be covered by their insurance. There are so many unknowns they are
experiencing at this time, but one that we're hoping to help with, is trying to ease this massive financial burden they're facing.

My hope is that we are able to raise a significant amount of money so that Alisa can take time away from work to take care of her children and Britten without having to stress as much about how they're going to make ends meet after experiencing this emergency situation. Alisa and Britten are truly some of the most genuine and down to earth people you'll ever meet. They are so hard-working and would never ask for any sort of handout or money from others, but I am very thankful she did give me permission to start this auction in their behalf because I know there are many people in this community that want to help, but simply don't know how!
