Support Brie and Roommate in Paying Off Unfair Debt

Hey guys. My roommate, Brie, and I have setup this GoFundMe to help after recent events involving a former roommate have left us in a tight financial situation. Here’s a little background information: All three of us signed the lease and therefore as tenants were under joint and several liability to make sure the rent was paid in full monthly. For the duration of her living with us, said roommate was causing a lot of problems and generally made the whole house uncomfortable and unwelcoming due to their erratic and inconsiderate behavior. In October 2024, we all received an email from the landlord stating that the problematic roommate in question hadn’t paid their portion of rent in eight months. Per the terms of the lease, we are all joint and severally liable for the debt which totaled to $4,400. When Brie and I found out about the unpaid rent, we were forced to kick this roommate out due to them not showing any signs of being willing to come up with a plan to pay off the debt and showing a complete lack of remorse for their actions. We luckily did not lose the house but per an agreement with the landlords who were willing to work with us, we now have to pay at least $185 more of rent per month to pay off the debt. We recently took our former roommate to court and received a favorable ruling that she has to pay back what we are currently paying but so far we have not seen any of this money and are not quite sure when we will or how long it will take for us to be paid back in full. This whole ordeal has been severely affecting Brie and I’s mental and financial well-being. The two of us have been responsible tenants and pay rent on time and keep our home looking nice. We’ve never had an issue with the landlord at all about anything we’ve done at the house but now we’re left to pay for someone’s mistake, literally.
