On April 13, 2019, Bridgette ran a half-marathon, an impressive accomplishment—not to mention a considerable challenge for this novice runner—that required strength, determination and grit. Only a year later, though, she's facing an even greater challenge—only this time it's life-altering, and something that she never could have trained for. At the end of this February, Bridgette knew something was wrong. She was often tired, a feeling that was accompanied by abdominal pain and swelling. Within two weeks, her symptoms had progressed, and an ultrasound revealed an ovarian cyst. A week later, the cyst had doubled in size, and she was headed into surgery.
The surgery was successful, but a biopsy confirmed Bridgette's worst fear: she had ovarian cancer. Luckily, the cancer was still in Stage 1, and hadn't yet spread. For now, she's staying in her husband's hometown, where she receives regular chemotherapy treatments with her husband and children by her side. The first chemotherapy session was by all accounts a success, but it wasn't without side effects. As she continues this journey, her family doesn't know what the final cost of treatment will be, but even with insurance they believe it could surpass $20,000.
That's why we're asking today for support for our beloved Bridgette, who's dedicated her life to inspiring children to learn, and helping others. The Akins Family is humbled that so many of you have reached out and offered help in so many beautiful ways. Thank you for your support and prayers during this challenging time for Bridgette and her family.
