My name is Kat, and I’m the mother of an amazing 13-year-old boy, Briar, who is about to face the fight of his life. On January 30th, Briar will undergo life-saving open-heart surgery to repair a severe congenital heart defect that is blocking blood flow to his heart and putting him at extreme risk of sudden cardiac death. Briar is also autistic, which makes this already overwhelming journey even harder for him.

As his mom, I will be by his side through surgery, recovery, and everything in between. But this means I can’t work for months while caring for him. Our family of 7 is already struggling to stay afloat after I lost my job, and we’ve been denied assistance. We are now responsible for medical bills, travel costs, and keeping up with rent, food, and utilities.
