A Story of Strength: Brian’s Journey with Ocular Melanoma (shared from his sister, Tracey)
In 2021, my older brother Brian was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma (OM)—a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the eye. He went through multiple surgeries and treatments, determined to save his vision and fight this disease head-on.
For a while, there was hope. But in December 2023, the tumor ruptured, and Brian was faced with a life-changing decision: he had to undergo surgery to remove the eye. He now wears a prosthetic eye that’s so realistic, it’s almost indistinguishable—still shining bright blue, just like my other hero my dad. Earlier this year, in February, Brian noticed he wasn’t feeling quite like himself. He had less energy, a smaller appetite, and just didn’t feel right. After a visit to his doctor, a CT scan revealed devastating news—the OM had metastasized to his liver. Further scans showed multiple nodules on other organs and even in his bones. OM moves quickly, and it became clear that immediate and aggressive treatment was critical.
There aren’t many specialized centers in the U.S. that treat metastatic OM, but thankfully, the team at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania does. Just last week, Brian, his wife Julie, and our younger brother Chris traveled there to meet with their oncology specialists. The doctors have started with targeted chemotherapy on his liver, and we're grateful to report that the initial procedure went WONDERFUL. Brian will need to return to Philadelphia a few times a month for continued treatments, accompanied by Julie and his new “private nurse,” our brother Chris. This journey is just beginning, and we’re praying these treatments are effective.
Despite everything, the most remarkable thing about all of this is Brian’s unshakable attitude. He’s facing this head-on with courage, humor, and so much heart. He’s truly a trooper—our inspiration.
As you can imagine, medical bills and travel expenses will add up quickly. We are asking for financial support as you feel led, and for your prayers.
We believe in miracles—and we believe in Brian.
