Title: Help Brian Devine in His Fight Against Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Life changed overnight for Brian Devine 4 months ago when he was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) — a rare neurological disorder that has taken away most of his ability to move and communicate.
For the past 4 months, Brian has been treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in the ICU unit and is on a ventilator and has a tracheotomy. He was recently transferred because of insurance to the Montgomery Subacute and Respiratory Center in Whitemarsh, PA. Brian is only able to communicate by nodding his head and is otherwise paralyzed from the neck down. His care will require physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with specialized medical support.
Brian is more than a patient — he is the heart of a big Philadelphia family. He is a dedicated husband to his wife, Teresa, a proud father and grandfather of four grandchildren who adore him. He is also a supportive brother to four brothers and two sisters. Raised in Kensington, Philadelphia, Brian is a proud North Catholic High School graduate who devotes his time to the alumni board. He bleeds green for his Eagles (Go Birds!) and loves watching the Penn State games, mainly to be around the people he cares about. He's a working class guy that lives his life simply but always finds time to selflessly give and help people whenever possible. Friends and family continue to visit him in the hospital everyday as a way of giving back the support he has always given them.
While Brian’s determination inspires us all, his medical journey comes with staggering costs. Insurance only covers a small part of the care, leaving his family with significant out-of-pocket expenses for medical equipment, caregiving, and transportation.
As an update, Brian was transported to Chestnut Hill Hospital two days ago due to complications with his breathing, sepsis, and low oxygen and blood pressure.
We are asking for your help to ease this financial burden. Every donation makes a difference. All donations will go strictly to defray the high costs of his medical treatment. If you cannot contribute, please support Brian by sharing his story and keeping him in your prayers.
With heartfelt thanks,
The Devine Family
