Last month our beloved Brett, known to everyone as “THE ICE CREAM KID” had the shock of his life. At a young 52 years, he was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.

Spring was here, the sun was out and the ice cream boating season had only just begun.

Brett recalled:

“One moment your life is the daily grind of doing what needs to be done, then the next day, life flashes before your eyes and the reality of what’s important really hits you in the face”.

“Things just hadn’t been feeling quite right for about a year. The symptoms were there but I was brushing them off as temporary, maybe it was a dietary thing, maybe it was that I was just run down and my body wasn’t coping. Until I had a fall in September and my body must’ve gone into shock and the Cancer accelerated making day to day life come to an absolute halt. Along with multiple doctor’s appointments, blood tests, colonoscopy, endoscopy, MRI, CT Scan and PET Scan my deepest fears came true; cancer had come knocking at my door”.

Brett has been the beating heart of summer on the harbour for years.

He is more than just the front man on the friendliest coolest IceCream boat handing out IceCreams every summer, he’s everyone’s friend. He’s always ready to lend a hand, always has time for a chat, puts his work aside for those sea side rescues or to help people out on the harbour.

Brett’s big personality, fun manner, friendly smile, jokes and the joy he brings to parents, adults, teenagers, tourists and all the little kids out on the harbour is what makes him unique and special.

Brett won’t be working this summer. He won’t be enjoying Christmas with his wonderful girlfriend or family. He won’t be celebrating his birthday or New Years Eve with his friends. Brett is now on forced to park his business to one side and lose his sole income whilst he undergoes rigorous testing, chemotherapy and radiotherapy to attempt to overcome this life changing Bowel Cancer. The next 12 months are seeming scary, not only financially, with no income and multiple medical bills already flowing in, but all the unknowns from the after effects of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy and how that's going to impact his body and day to day life down the track.
