Help Brent Fight ALS and Reclaim His Life

"We’re not giving up. Brent is fighting every single day—and we’re asking for your help to keep that fight going."

A Shocking Turn for a Lifelong Athlete
Our friend and former Mary Star High School teacher Brenda Beers’ husband, Brent, has always been the picture of health—an avid 10K runner, lifelong racquetball competitor, gym regular, hiker, swimmer, skier, kayaker, and builder of dreams through his general contracting work in Mesa, Arizona.

But in March 2024, Brent noticed something odd. Tingling in his fingers. Weakness in his shoulder. Within months, it spread to both arms. By July, the unthinkable happened: a diagnosis of ALS—Lou Gehrig’s disease. And since then, Brent’s body has rapidly declined.
He has already lost most use of his arms and hands. Simple actions— eating, dressing, typing, walking — are now a daily struggle.

What is ALS?
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. It eventually robs people of the ability to move, speak, eat, and breathe. The prognosis is devastating—most people live only 3 to 5 years after diagnosis. The two FDA-approved drugs for ALS extend life by only a few months.

Brent is only 58 years old. And he’s not ready to give up.

⚕️ A Radical, Research-Based Hope: Dr. Goodenowe’s Protocol
In the spring of 2025, Brent found a beacon of hope: Dr. Dayan Goodenowe’s Restorative Health Center in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Dr. Goodenowe, a neuroscientist and molecular pharmacologist, has spent decades researching neurodegenerative diseases like ALS, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

His treatment program centers on restoring mitochondrial function—the energy centers of our cells—using targeted supplementation, detoxification, physical therapy, and advanced therapies like hyperbaric oxygen, natural mineral soaks, and specialized testing.

Brent arrived at the center for this self-directed protocol on May 12, 2025. After a year of heartbreaking decline, he’s finally seeing his first glimmers of hope—like gaining weight and recovering slight muscle mass in his arms.

Those tiny victories are everything.

‍‍‍ A Family Rooted in Service—and in Need of Yours
Brent’s wife, Brenda, has been a devoted Catholic educator for 33 years. Their daughters, Caitlin and Cassidy, are teachers too. Brent has always been a huge support for Brenda’s job as Activities Director and the girls’ Catholic education.

The whole family has served together feeding the homeless, packing food for distribution in Third World countries, helping children with life-threatening illnesses, and now they are pouring themselves into helping Brent with this fight.

From home-cooked anti-inflammatory meals to functional medicine consultations, from red light therapy and extra hydrogen to parasite detoxes, and ALS clinic visits… They’ve tried it all.

But nothing has been as promising or hopeful as Dr. Goodenowe’s program.

"This is the first time since Brent’s diagnosis that our family has seen even a shadow of a path forward. Not just to slow the disease, but to fight back. We believe this is his best, and possibly only, chance at reclaiming enough strength to live with dignity, purpose, and connection."

Every single day, we pray this treatment will give Brent the time and the quality of life to keep showing up for the people he loves.
In a world where most ALS patients are told to expect steady decline, even a 10% improvement would feel like crossing the finish line of a marathon. Brent is ready to run that race!

The Cost of Hope
Brent’s 3-month stay at the Restorative Health Center is not covered by insurance. Between travel, lodging, testing, daily treatments, and extensive supplement protocols, the cost is overwhelming.

But the potential for improvement is life-changing.

We are asking for your help to:
  • Cover the cost of Brent’s stay and treatment at Dr. Goodenowe’s clinic
  • Support ongoing care and therapies once he returns home, including communication technology, in-home care, and everyday living expenses
  • Contribute to the equipment and potential remodeling needed to support Brent’s condition and keep him safe
  • Give Brent a fighting chance to stabilize this aggressive disease and regain some lost functionality

On average, the annual out-of-pocket cost for ALS care in the U.S. ranges from $100,000 to $200,000.
