From Rural Roots to Global Nursing: England Bound! ✈️

Hello friends, family, and kind supporters,

My name is Breanna Santiago, and I’ve recently graduated from nursing school—a journey that’s been anything but ordinary. As a nontraditional, first-generation college student, a proud mother to five incredible daughters, and a woman from a rural community, I’ve worked tirelessly to turn my dreams into reality.

During my time in nursing school, I served as Treasurer for my school’s Student Nurses Association, advocated for healthcare policy at Nurses Day at the Capitol in Madison, and was recently nominated for a Student Leadership Award. I’ve also been working at MercyHealth Hospital in Janesville as a student nurse intern since August 2024—while also driving a school bus part time to support my family.

This year brought unexpected challenges. In March, I suffered a series of seizures, and shortly after, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my grandmother. At times, I wasn’t sure I’d make it across the finish line. But thanks to the unwavering support of my family, friends, and especially my instructors at Blackhawk Technical College, I did it—I became an RN!

Now, I’ve been granted an incredible opportunity: to study abroad in Sunderland, England starting May 29th, 2025!

This study abroad program is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore global healthcare, strengthen my nursing skills, and gain firsthand experience with how other countries support their patients and providers. Even more exciting—this course is worth 3 college credits and will directly apply toward earning my Bachelor’s degree in nursing, a goal I plan to pursue in the near future.

Throughout my nursing journey, I’ve drawn strength and inspiration from Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing—whose legacy lives on in England, where I’ll be studying. Her words, "I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took any excuse," have deeply resonated with me, especially through the challenges I’ve faced as a student, a mother, and a caregiver. This opportunity feels like a full-circle moment—to walk where she once walked and continue the mission she began.

As someone passionate about service and lifelong learning, I know this experience will shape me into the culturally competent, compassionate nurse I strive to be.

I’m honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a nationally competitive award that has provided me with $3,000 toward the program. The total cost of the trip is $6,100. I’m reaching out for help covering the remaining expenses, including flights, lodging, meals, local transportation, and educational materials.

Why This Matters:
I’ll gain insight into the UK’s healthcare system and bring that knowledge back to serve my rural community.

I’ll enhance my clinical and cultural nursing skills on a global scale.

This 3-credit course will count toward my future Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

‍‍ I want to show my daughters—and other women like me—that with determination and support, anything is possible.

I hope to honor the spirit of Florence Nightingale by embodying her courage and perseverance.

Whether you’re able to donate or simply share this campaign, your support means the world to me. Every contribution brings me one step closer to this life-changing opportunity. I would be proud to acknowledge your support on social media and/or in a presentation about my experience upon my return.

With deep gratitude,
Breanna Santiago, RN
