Support Break Film!

Through three different lifetimes, a powerful young femme comes into contact with the forces of death and ancestry that connect her to a mysterious home in the woods.

'Break' is a film that explores themes of death and memory, of loss, of identity. This project is our senior capstone film, and we are committed to centering Black femmes in narratives that show us in extraordinary, yet familiar circumstances. Our vision seeks to strike a balance between the magical and the mundane. Naturally, as we emerge into this rich tradition of Afro-surrealism and independent Black film, we feel the need to get it right. And that’s why we need your help!

This Spring, we are working with incredibly talented actors to make these narratives come to life. Our goal is to compensate our them along with our hard-working crew. We will also need additional funding for props, lighting, and festival entry fees. As students, these costs pose a great difficulty, so we are really counting on our support system of friends and family. We can’t wait to keep you updated throughout this process––it is the culminating moment of our film program, and thus a commitment we do not take lightly.

We have been carrying these stories for so long––we would love the opportunity to set them down in front of you. Please share our story and support student artists. We would truly be grateful.

More about 'Break'

On a trip(tych) through time, three vignettes explore the interactions between a young femme and a home in the woods. In each of her different lives, she has a different experience of the space. The first vignette focuses on Willow, a member of a coven of young witches tasked with the objective of eliminating bad seeds. As her interests in the strange society around her grow, she must make a difficult choice between her desire to know the world and her need to protect it. The second vignette focuses on Ross in the year 2099 as she returns to the city she grew up in to run her family’s bookstore. She faces complications with her pregnancy as a spirit from 2019 tries to contact her. Finally, Ava, a college student,  is drawn to the forest where she stumbles upon an abandoned home. There, ancestral spirits attempt to make contact with her when things go awry.
