Help Us Keep Our Rescued Horses Warm and Fed This Winter
Hello from BraveHearts Equine Center in Paris, Kentucky!
We are a roughly 140-acre equine rescue sanctuary dedicated to giving second chances to draft horses and burros in need—many of them seniors and special cases that require lifelong care. Right now, we are home to around 100 wonderful horses and burros who rely entirely on us for food, shelter, veterinary care, and love.
We've been hit hard by Winter Storm Fern and the extreme, prolonged cold that followed. With temperatures staying below freezing, combined with snow, wind, and wet conditions, our horses' energy needs have skyrocketed. Horses burn extra calories just to stay warm.
The very best way to help them maintain body condition and generate internal heat is by feeding more high-quality hay. We've significantly increased hay rations across the herd to meet these demands, but this prolonged cold snap has depleted our stores much faster than usual.
Under normal conditions, good-quality hay costs us roughly $1,950 per horse per year. In this extreme weather, many need 30–50% more to stay healthy and comfortable. That means we're going through hundreds of extra pounds of hay every single day!
We want to ensure every horse stays strong, maintains weight, and avoids health issues from the cold. But replenishing our supply of good-quality hay has become a major challenge—prices are high, and demand is up everywhere after the storm.
We're launching this fundraiser to raise $15,000 to cover the cost of additional hay to get us through the rest of this winter and rebuild our reserves. Every dollar will go directly toward purchasing premium hay, delivery fees, and minimal waste/buffer.
Here are some easy ways to become a Hay Hero (cost per horse):
$38 – Sponsors half a round bale (one week’s worth)
$75 – Covers one round bale (about two weeks of hay for a single horse!)
$150 – Provides two round bales
$300 – Funds four round bales (a full month’s average supply)
$1,950 fully covers one horse's normal annual hay — imagine the impact of helping multiple!
We are a donor-funded rescue with no big sponsors—every contribution truly makes a difference in keeping these gentle giants safe, healthy, and happy.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with us and our rescued family during this tough time. Together, we can make sure no horse goes hungry or cold.
Donations are tax-deductible. EIN: 92-1567952.
