On 27th of April 2024, beautiful baby Sadie Stewart entered the world, surrounded by love from her devoted parents, Gemma and Daniel, and her proud big sister, Savannah. Not long after birth, Sadie was diagnosed with aniridia — the absence of an iris — which also results in low vision. This discovery led to further genetic testing and a formal diagnosis of WAGR syndrome, an extremely rare genetic disorder.
Sadie is quite literally one in a million — with only 450 to 500 people worldwide diagnosed with WAGR. This condition can affect various systems in the body, including the brain, kidneys, and eyes, with symptoms and severity varying greatly from person to person.
Since her diagnosis, Sadie has been working hard with physiotherapy and occupational therapy to support her development, and she has been undergoing regular ultrasounds to monitor her kidneys. Heartbreakingly, during a recent routine scan, doctors discovered a 9cm tumour on one of her kidneys.
Sadie has now been diagnosed with cancer.
At just 11 months old, she has already faced more than most people do in a lifetime. She has been hospitalised, undergone surgery to insert a port, and has bravely begun chemotherapy. Her journey will now include ongoing treatment, regular hospital visits, and surgery. Due to her treatment and being immunocompromised, Sadie’s 1st birthday celebrations have sadly been postponed.
This incredible family has had their lives turned upside down almost overnight. Both Gemma and Daniel are doing everything they can to care for their beautiful daughters — Sadie and Savannah — while facing the financial strain of extended time off work, ongoing daycare fees, mortgage repayments, and daily living costs.
We are reaching out to ask for your support during this unimaginable time. Any contribution, big or small, will go directly towards easing the financial burden on this selfless, loving family — so they can focus on what matters most: helping Sadie heal.
Thank you for standing with Sadie and her family. Your kindness means the world.
