Brandee has been one of my dearest friends since we met over a decade ago, our businesses side by side. She’s always been the kind of person who puts others first, and now she’s facing a challenge that none of us could have imagined. For almost a year, Brandee has been fighting a mysterious illness, but about a month ago, her condition took a sudden and devastating turn. She was admitted to the ICU and has been 90% paralyzed from the chest down. Despite the efforts of about 40 doctors, the exact cause remains unknown, though it appears to be a rare autoimmune condition causing inflammation of her spinal cord. She’s endured countless tests and treatments, and her body is now very immunocompromised, making visits impossible and her recovery even more isolating. Brandee will soon move to a rehab center for a short stay so she can continue to improve her mobility, but her journey is far from over. After rehab, she’ll need to find a place to live without stairs and continue her treatments, which could take months to show results. The costs of her medical care, rehabilitation, housing, and daily living expenses are piling up quickly.
