Welcome to the story of Bowie the Brave!
On July 5th Bowie went to urgent care for what we thought was a simple stomach bug. The doctor on call recommended a CT scan to rule out appendicitis. Upon receiving the results of the scan, the doctor was shocked to see a large mass on Bowie's liver. It was completely unexpected news and doctors sprung into action.
Bowie was urgently admitted to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis that night. After some blood work, an MRI, and further analysis, doctors decided Bowie might have liver cancer and surgery was scheduled to remove the mass on July 15th.
She endured the six-hour-long surgery like a champ and has been recovering so well. However, doctors were concerned about how the cancer cells were presenting themselves in pathology, so they sent the results to a specialist in Cincinnati. After a grueling two-week wait, we received news that Bowie has a type of liver cancer that was unexpected; a type that is not usually found in children and is extremely aggressive: hepatocellular carcinoma.
Sweet Bowie started chemotherapy treatments mid August, two days after receiving the news of her cancer diagnosis. She will have three more rounds of chemo, ending in October. After that, her team will do more bloodwork, more scans, etc, to see how her body reacted to the treatment and then we'll go from there.
Because of the rarity of this cancer in children (almost less than .05%), there are many unknowns right now. What we do know is that Bowie is a strong, brave little girl and despite what the numbers might say, she will fight the "villains" inside her (as she says) and she will make it through this chapter of her life.
Please help support Bowie the Brave through her journey with liver cancer! All funds will be used for medical bills, transportation, wigs and other expenses incurred while on this journey. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated - thank you!!
