Hi, my name is Mike Garland, and I’m a fourth-grade teacher at Grew Elementary School in Boston, Massachusetts. I’m raising funds to support an unforgettable learning experience for my 4th grade students at Grew.
Our class has been invited to participate in Farms for City Kids in Reading, Vermont—a life-changing, week-long program that connects students to nature, teamwork, and responsibility. While the program itself is free, we need help covering the cost of transportation so that 20+ fourth graders can attend.
During their time on the farm, students will care for dairy cows, calves, and chickens; learn firsthand how cheese and maple syrup are made; hike through the sugar bush; and work in the garden planting, weeding, and harvesting crops. These hands-on experiences build directly on what we learn in the classroom while fostering leadership, perseverance, empathy, and collaboration.
Five days and four nights away from home help students grow in confidence and independence. By stepping outside their comfort zones, caring for animals, and supporting one another, students develop compassion and responsibility—values that align deeply with Grew’s core virtues. As past students have shared, the experience is not only fun, but truly transformational.
Your donation—no matter the amount—helps make this opportunity possible and keeps a powerful Grew tradition alive. I’ve seen firsthand the lasting impact this program has on young lives, and I hope you’ll consider supporting our students on this journey. Thank you for being part of their growth and learning.
