Hi - My name is Molly, I am a good friend and co-worker of Mel's. She called me on Thursday, May 30th to tell me that Bo was at Kost Dam with a few friends when he fell and had an open, bleeding fracture. At that time, Mel didn't know how bad it was because a boat was needed to get him. Once to shore, he was taken by EMS to Regions for a trauma.

Bo went into his first surgery that night for a fractured fibula, tibula and ankle. With the size of the laceration from his bones going through the skin, there was a lot of debris in the wound, that took a couple hours of surgery to clean out. A fixation device was also placed to hold everything stable until the swelling went down enough to go the main surgery.

Saturday was his second surgery, where they cleaned out more debris and put a pin, screws and a plate in to align the bones. There was a concern about needing skin grafts done at the wound site as well.

After 4 days and 2 surgeries, Bo was discharged home Monday evening. On Tuesday he spiked a fever so he had to go back to ER where they cut his cast off, and had x-rays, ultrasound, blood work done to check for infection. He was sent home with no infection found which was good news. Bo will have a long road to recovery ahead of him.

The week of the accident, Mel started a new job at Hazelden. Because of that, she has no paid time off work. I'm hoping that this will help with the financial stress of the missed work and medical bills so they can heal and get to appointments without as much worry.
