My name is Boris Turner. I'm a Detroit-area native, raised in Novi, Michigan, and a graduate of Novi High School. This spring, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Howard University's Cathy Hughes School of Communications with a Bachelor of Arts in Media, Journalism, and Film.

At Howard, I dedicated myself to the craft of storytelling, learning not just how to report the news, but how to pursue narratives with honesty, depth, and the full, uncut truth. I independently published news stories on issues ranging from the importance of civic participation to missing Black children in the DC area. My career is built on a simple commitment: truth, service, and impactful change. I've had the privilege of interning with The Baltimore Beat, TNT Sports, and the Scholar Athlete Sports Network (SASN) — experiences that let me draw on both my grassroots upbringing and my sports knowledge to strengthen my reporting.

* The Baltimore Beat: I regularly covered local council meetings, surfacing key information that shaped reporters' stories and sharpened their questions for council members.

* TNT Sports: I worked across nearly every stage of sports production, building graphics for the NBA Draft, shadowing producers during the NBA Finals, and briefing on-air talent ahead of the college football season.

* Scholar Athlete Sports Network (SASN): I recorded games and interviewed athletes about their performances and their goals for the rest of the season.

I also completed the competitive CNN Academy Bootcamp at the Ted Turner Campus in Atlanta, sharpening my journalism and storytelling skills alongside a talented cohort of aspiring journalists. My reporting has also been featured by NewsOne, one of the nation's leading Black-owned news platforms dedicated to covering issues affecting Black communities.

I've been accepted into Emerson College's full-time, one-year Master's program in Digital Communication Leadership, a program that will equip me with the skills to manage, and one day build, my own media network. My vision is a network built on unfiltered journalism: one that reflects the harsh realities faced by Black people and other historically oppressed communities, while also celebrating their strength, culture, and humanity.

Emerson has recognized my academic achievements with a half-tuition scholarship. I'm deeply grateful for that support, but a significant financial gap remains. My parents took on loans and made real sacrifices to help me through my undergraduate years, and I'm now working to carry the next step of this journey forward on my own. Being parents to three children, they have already seen two of their kids graduate from Howard with a third one graduating in 2029. Their efforts and resources are stretched thin.
