My baby brother Caleb — everyone calls him Boomer — came to Illinois to visit me. His first night here, he had a stroke. He spent 6 days in the hospital. While he was there, doctors found something else: his kidneys are failing. He now has to go on the transplant list and wait for a donor.

If you're from Bogota, NJ, you probably already know Boomer. He spent years as an EMT and first responder in our town — the guy who showed up when other people were having their worst day. Now it's his turn to need help, and it's hard to sit with that.

He's staying with me while he recovers. Right now that means learning to walk on his own again. After that, it means facing a kidney transplant. He's unable to return to work right now, and he does not have health insurance — so on top of growing medical bills, he's without an income while he heals.
