Since that time our limited capacity to serve our customers--from an active and engaged distance--has not been able to sustain the 28 non-owner employees of the store, many of whom rely on the bookstore as a primary source of income.
Even with public assistance, modest ongoing sales and virtual events, we are being honest about the store's need for more staff-sustaining help, both in this moment and in fair projection of the challenges it will face as it enters a vastly altered landscape of retail and live cultural event-hosting that have been historically vital sources of sustenance. We are poised to imagine and create our services and (when the time is right) our fully opened doors with fresh perspective on our mission to be a strong supporter of, and meaningful participant in, creative and intellectual community within and beyond Kalamazoo. We are calling on our customers and supporters who believe in this too.
Every dollar raised by this campaign will be directed to our non-owner staff .
