On August 4th, in a freak accident, Bon broke his foot. X-rays show it’s a calcaneus (heel bone) fracture, and doctors say he will not be able to walk, drive or put weight on it for at least three months. This is a serious injury and how it heals will determine future quality of life for Bon. Rehabilitation and full recovery may take up to two years. If you can, please consider donating to and sharing this campaign. Every contribution, small or large, is greatly appreciated and will help support Bon in his recovery and rehabilitation. As we get a better idea of his prognosis and needs, updates will be provided.
What happened? While cleaning out a boat, he found a wasp nest. He jumped out of the boat (which was on a trailer), landed, and instantly fell to the ground, the pain unlike anything he’d ever experienced—his right heel had landed on a pointed piece of gravel, the bone broken.
Thankfully he has a wonderful partner in Tamara, who has steadfastly been there for him. Also friends in our music community have generously stepped up to continue producing Live Music Sundays, the weekly event Bon started seven years ago at Finkles Shore Park, so it will run to the end of September as planned. A kind soul donated a knee scooter, which has been very helpful, and we were able to purchase a portable motorized scooter (pictured) that Bon can use, with assistance for now, while still keeping his foot elevated.
In addition to playing solo and band shows that feature his own compositions, Bon showcases, supports and provides opportunities for local artists and aspiring musicians at Live Music Sundays and as a recording engineer, producer and host on Amherst Island Radio, for which he volunteers his time. His upcoming trip to Halifax—which would have completed his fourth tour across our great country and back performing as Artist On Board Via Rail—had to be cancelled. On August 21, he’ll be seeing an orthopaedic surgeon.
