Support Bogey’s TPLO Recovery and Infection Treatment

My name is Jenessa and I'm fundraising on behalf of my parents' dog, Bogey. Last fall, Bogey tore the cranial cruciate ligament, or CCL, in his knee - the dog equivalent of an ACL in humans. This is a serious and very painful injury that almost always requires surgery in order for dogs to walk normally again and avoid long-term joint damage and arthritis. Although CCL repair surgery is a specialized orthopedic procedure, most dogs do very well afterward, with studies showing about 85–95% of dogs return to normal activity; however, the recovery can be long and complex, and about 50% of dogs who tear one CCL will eventually tear the other, even with good recovery and care.

In early September 2025, Bogey had his first knee surgery - the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO). This procedure was a little more involved due to a "bucket handle tear" of the meniscus, meaning it had flipped over the knee and had to be cut off. They also cut and repositioned the tibia, then inserted a metal plate and 6 screws for stabilization.

During his recovery, Bogey developed complications with his surgical wound never fully closing or healing. About three months into his recovery, the statistic we hoped wouldn't apply to Bogey became reality - he tore the ligament in his other knee. In his second surgery, the vet reopened his first knee to check for infection and remove the metal plate that may have been contributing to his healing complications. They also removed benign cancerous cells from his stomach.

Since his second surgery last month, Bogey has faced even more challenges, including infections and ongoing issues with wound healing. He will go under general anesthesia AGAIN (for the 4th or 5th time during this whole ordeal) this week for more wound and infection treatment.

So far, my parents have spent over $12,000 for the two major orthopedic surgeries and associated care. The costs continue to rise as he deals with these infections and other setbacks in his recovery. While this has created unexpected financial strain for my parents, they are committed to giving Bogey every chance to heal and get back to being the happy and active dog he is. Right now, he is in pain, depressed, and clearly misses playing with his friends and walks on the greenway. He is only 5 years old, and mostly we just want to see him healthy, comfortable, and enjoying life again.

My parents would never ask on their own, but if you are able to help at all, we would be incredibly grateful. If not, sharing this page means just as much. Any funds raised will go towards his ongoing infection treatment and recovery care.

Thank you for reading Bogey's story and for supporting him and our family.

With gratitude,
Jenessa
