Bob, “Shep” as everyone knows him, was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, and over time his condition progressively worsened. As his breathing became more difficult, and had to be on oxygen 24/7, he was placed on the transplant list — holding onto hope, faith, and the possibility of a second chance at life.
During one especially difficult time, Shep said a special prayer to God, asking for strength and healing of his lungs, and for the opportunity to continue being there for his family and community. While he was praying Not long after that prayer, he received the call that would change everything — lungs were available.
On February 14, Shep received the incredible gift of a double lung transplant.
While we are overwhelmed with gratitude for this miracle, the journey ahead is still long. Recovery from a double lung transplant requires extensive medical care, frequent follow-ups, medications, and months away from work.
Shep is currently on a leave of absence from his job as an IT specialist so he can focus fully on healing. During this time, we are asking for support for him, his wife Ruth, and their two children, Hunter and Jade.
Shep has always been a pillar of our community. He has:
• Was PIAA in Soccer and Basketball and hopes to get back to it.
• Refereed and coached youth basketball, soccer, as well as youth special Olympics.
• Captained, was a commissioner of, and star player in the 40OV league basketball league.
• Long term Vice President of the Fox Chapel Winter League Basketball Program.
• Serves on the board of the Fox Chapel Soccer Youth Soccer club, known now as FCFC Futbol.
He has poured so much into others — mentoring kids, encouraging athletes, and strengthening our community. Now it’s our turn to lift him up.
