Bobby is a young and beautiful Belgian Malinois from Mexico in our neighborhood of Atwater Village (Los Angeles). Bobby has been living in an abusive household his entire life, being left to fend for himself on the streets. He has been spotted by many folks concerned for his welfare. He has had terrible skin infections and sores, and often looks thirsty and tired. But he is loyal to his abusive household and has always gone back to their house; the first time we rescued him he ran back later that night.
We spoke with the owner and explained that we were there to help him, later finding that the owner has tried to give Bobby away multiple times. He no longer has the mental nor physical capacity to care for him, and taking him off his hands is the best thing for him and for Bobby.
My neighbors Stephanie, Nick and I have been witness to Bobby’s suffering for newly 3 months now. We have dubbed ourselves “Team Bobby” and have invested our own time and money in trying to move Bobby out of a dire situation.
He likes to play fetch, enjoys the company of other dogs, but needs patience. Unfortunately, the three of us have existing dogs and cannot home him long term.
After many months of seeing him on the street, we knew we had to do something. Luckily the neighbor knew that Bobby would be in better hands, and gave up the rights to my 2 other neighbors and I last week. Nick took him to the vet to get him up to date on his shots. He’s also on antibiotics to clear up his skin issues. We have spent over $1000 caring for him, getting him the medical care, food, and toys he deserves. My neighbor Nick has personally made huge strides with Bobby, turning him from a fearful dog who wouldn’t walk on a leash and afraid of getting into the car to a lovable boy who likes pets and affection.
As Bobby is on the mend with us and as we are seeking for rescues and long term foster care solutions, he really needs a loving family, some training and rehabilitation.
We feel it is best for Bobby to be in a home further away so he is not tempted to run back to his dire situation. We are able to transport as far as 6 hours away and are determined not to put him in a shelter which can worsen his trauma or put him down. He needs training, trust and more brightness in his life. Under our watch, Bobby has received necessary medical care (up to date on shots, and has been on antibiotics for his skin issues), has had a safe home, has been fed, walked, and loved for 3 weeks.
We don’t want to give him back to the neglectful owner who gave him up to us, but we may have to as we’re running out of options. And as horrible as it sounds, we know he will be back on the street fending for himself with his previous owner. In a way we would prefer that over a shelter who could put him down.
We are just three neighbors who love animals but don’t have the bandwidth or training to continue helping him. We would like to see him in a happy, healthy home. With a little training and love, he would make for an active and loyal friend to compliment his sweet demeanor.
Please consider contributing-every amount will make a difference in keeping him fed and cover his medical bills, and transportation costs. If he is fostered and or/rescued, the remaining amount will be donated to his rescue.
Best,
Nancy
