I am passionate about people but I also happen to be blind. I began to lose my vision at the age of sixteen. At the age of twenty-two my eyesight became so bad that I could only see some light and color from a small section of my left eye. It was scary and absolutely devastating to go from someone who enjoyed photography, art, and styling/cutting hair, to someone who constantly needed an arm for guidance in unfamiliar places. Still, I never stopped finding joy in helping others therefor I volunteered at my church in Denver for many years in the music and youth department.
As I began to gain more confidence in my skills as a legally blind person, I became interested in how adaptable and strong people can be. My fascination with psychology and the human brain developed into the dream to become a neuropsychologist.
I was never smarter than average but losing my vision has taught me that hard work and perseverance are the true keys to success.
When I moved to Washington I decided to finally start college at the age of twenty-six.
I was signed up for classes for the Spring of 2018. I was beyond excited to start this new chapter of my life. Two weeks before school started though, my whole world went dark. Not being able to see any light or color was the most overwhelming and emotional part of my journey.
I knew I had the skills but I still had a decision to make. Would I allow this circumstance to kill my dreams, or would I decide to move forward despite this tragic event.
I chose to pursue my education and I have not regretted a single moment of it.
I am now in my second year and I have constantly been an honor roll student, despite the fact that I have to work five times harder than everybody else.
We all know how expensive school can be, especially when you’re taking extra classes to finish quicker. This is why I want to offer the opportunity to anyone who has it on their heart to invest in my dream of becoming a neuropsychologist.
I plan on conducting research in the area of the human brain, and to specialize in counseling others who go through hardships. People are much stronger than they realize and I want to be someone who helps others understand that.
Even if you don’t donate, I want you to know that you are amazing and that you should never allow anything to hold you back from what you are meant to do in this life.
God bless you!
