My brother, Blake Hunsaker (39), is a devoted father, loving husband, and loyal friend. He has always shown up for the people he loves, even while quietly carrying more than his share of hardship. The last four years, in particular, have been incredibly difficult.
Four years ago, Blake went into renal failure and needed an emergency liver transplant to save his life. That moment changed everything. He committed himself to living with gratitude, honor, and strength, and he has fought every day since to be there for his family.
Unfortunately, serious complications followed the transplant. Blake’s body began producing large amounts of fluid that would build up in his abdomen and around his organs, causing intense pain and making it hard for him to move, exercise, or even climb stairs. For four years, doctors searched for answers. He went through multiple procedures and tests, but nothing worked.
To manage the fluid buildup, Blake has had to undergo paracentesis procedures twice a week, each time removing 5–7 liters of fluid. Every procedure takes about half a day between the treatment and recovery. This schedule has made it extremely hard for him to keep a steady job, participate fully in family life, or enjoy a normal day-to-day existence.
Recently, his doctors finally discovered the underlying cause: a severe case of constrictive pericarditis. The sac around his heart has calcified and hardened, preventing his heart from relaxing properly and causing his body to produce excess fluid. Blake was referred to a specialist in Cleveland (he lives in San Antonio), where they determined he needs a pericardiectomy—a major surgery to remove the calcified sac so his heart can function normally.
This is a serious operation that requires Blake to stay in Cleveland for about 3–4 weeks for pre-op testing, surgery, and initial recovery. Because of his limited mobility, it is actually cheaper and safer for him and his wife to stay at a hotel connected to the Cleveland Clinic. Even with discounted rates and careful planning, the costs are overwhelming.
Blake and his family are now maxing out their credit cards, and he will be out of work for at least 3–4 weeks while recovering from a broken sternum and going through cardiac rehab. They need an additional $3,000–$5,000 to help cover:
• Medical expenses not covered by insurance
• Travel and lodging costs in Cleveland
• Essential household bills while Blake is unable to work
If you are able, please consider donating to help Blake and his family get through this critical time. Any amount truly helps and is deeply appreciated.
The good news is that his doctors are very optimistic. If this surgery goes as planned, it should finally relieve his physical limitations and allow him to return to a full, active, and productive life with his family. Your support can help him get to that brighter future.
Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and helping in any way you can.
