Hi, I’m Elisa Choffel Low, and I’m fundraising to send my future son-in-law Blake to finish college. Let me tell you about why I’m so proud of him and want to help him finish college.
Blake graduated high school in 2021, in the middle of a pandemic. His graduation ceremony was outdoors and socially distanced. Half of his junior year and most of his senior year were done remotely. Despite all this, he graduated R L Turner High School with a STEM academy endorsement and received a full scholarship to attend Dallas College community college.
While at Dallas College Blake became a core founding member of the Male Achievement Program which helps first-generation college students, and in his last year mentored several freshmen through this group.
Blake is the first person in his family to go to college. His late grandfather, Ramiro Jaramillo Sr. was the first one in the family to be born in the US and worked for many years on a farm. To see his grandson graduate from high school brought tears to PawPaw’s eyes. It was beyond his wildest dreams.
Now Blake has received a full scholarship to Texas A&M Commerce, where he wants to study wildlife conservation, but even more importantly, he wanted to make sure I put this part in: “I want to get a college degree so I can support my future wife.”
Johanna and Blake met when she was 8 and he was 9 and have been inseparable ever since. With our blessing, he asked Johanna to marry him this past May.
The one obstacle remaining is that Blake’s scholarship only covers tuition, but to attend he will need to live on campus. Room, board, books and supplies are estimated to be $7,565 per semester or $15,130 per year. Blake plans to apply to become a Resident Assistant next year which, if he is selected, would cover room and board. Additionally he thinks he can probably contribute up to $3,000 through summer job and part time work during the school year. Both of Blake’s parents are disabled and so are not able to contribute toward his college expenses.
This leaves a shortfall of $12,130 for the first year. Would you like to support this amazing, determined young man? Please share his story, and if you are moved to, send a donation to help!
