Hello, my name is Bishop Corey Ruffin Sr., and I am a 53-year-old heart transplant recipient from the UCSD Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center in San Diego, California. Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition that caused my heart to enlarge to dangerous levels. Over time, my health deteriorated to the point where I was fainting simply from standing up. My only hope for survival was a heart transplant, which took place on March 7, 2025. By God's grace, the surgery was a success, and just three days later, I was out of the ICU. While my recovery is progressing steadily, we faced yet another challenge: after my biopsy on March 17, 2025, we had to relocate to San Diego for extensive rehabilitation. The doctors recommended that we stay in the area for the next 3-6 months, as I would need regular medical appointments and ongoing care. We currently lived in Downey, California, which is a two-hour drive from the hospital, and I will need to find housing in San Diego during my recovery. This move placed a significant financial strain on my family. My wife was on FMLA to care for me, and my resources was stretched thin. We asked for support to cover the expenses of living in San Diego while maintaining our home back in Downey. I would like to thank every single person that contributed. Now that I’m home most of the expenses i thought were covered are now being denied by the VA. We are being asked to cover 7,500 for our housing. My recovery is going well and September 7th marked 6 months since the surgery! My rehabilitation is coming along fine! I can’t rush it because when I try my body let’s me know quick. The areas of concern is still breathing and my internal organs are still healing. I press daily to not look like what I’m going through. I’m still on anti rejection medication as well as other meds!
