Birgit Alves is more than my grandmother—she is my best friend, my safe place, and the heart of our entire family. She is the kind of person who makes everyone feel loved, seen, and cared for. For as long as I can remember, she has been the glue holding us all together, always putting others before herself. Whether it was her family, her animals, or her beloved great-grandchildren, her love knew no limits. She would give her last dollar to someone in need without a second thought. That’s just who she is—selfless, kind, and full of so much love. She has touched more lives than she will ever know.
Right now, our hearts are breaking. My grandma has been hospitalized and is rapidly declining from cancer. Watching someone who has been our strength for so long become so fragile is a pain we can’t put into words. My grandfather, her partner and best friend, has stayed by her side every moment, caring for her and loving her through it all. Because of this, he has been unable to work, and the weight of everything—emotionally and financially—is becoming overwhelming.
