I am not one to ask for help or broadcast my problems, but I'm desperate. The long and short of it is that my jaw bones and skull base have deteriorated so much that I have persistent pain, trouble chewing, trouble sleeping, and I need double jaw surgery, which is very expensive and minimally covered by insurance.
I'm sure many of you have heard of or suffer from teeth grinding. But did you know that some people have grinding, combined with idopathic condylar absorption? This is a condition where my mandibular condyle (the part of your jaw that forms the joint with the skull base) as well as the skull base portion [temporal fossa] can deteriorate and disappear, displacing the jaw down and back: I have this condition.
I have lost so much of my jawbone and skull base that I can no longer bring my teeth together and I've ground a hole in my skull base.
Over the last few years, I have spent much time and money on conservative treatments, such as nighttime occlusal guards, 24hr bite guards, platelet rich plasma injections, myofacial PT, biomodulation laser therapy and simply living on smoothies because it is too painful to chew! Yet, my condition has progressed and as my jaw deteriorates, it has even compressed my airway, causing significant sleep apnea as well.
The above pictures showcase the amount of anatomical/structural change that has happened in less than a year - the picture with Ben is about 6 months before I could no longer close my teeth, as seen in my solo "mug shot" of me with my first stage of braces, FULLY closing my teeth to my current ability!! I can't bite through anything.
My only remaining definitive treatment option is a bilateral temporomandibular joint replacement with a Le Fort maxillary advancement to rebuild my joint and open my airway - meaning they will be cutting off, manipulating and realigning both my upper and lower jaw (double jaw surgery) in the same operation. This very complex and expensive surgery is only very minimally covered by insurance AND also requires having braces to fixate my jaws closed and assist in realigning teeth.
Having just graduated from PA school (YAY!), our emergency funds are almost exhausted from several years of childcare, living expenses and only having one income. BUT I need $85,000 paid UPFRONT for my surgery, that's not including the braces and cost of being hospitalized for 3-5 days post op/anesthesia/OR time, etc.
I'm struggling to eat; I'm not sleeping; I need help. So, anything you could donate would be FOREVER appreciated. If you want more information on my condition, surgeries, etc, please reach out to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart <3
