My name is James Oscher — or as the family calls me, Little Jim. That’s because my father, Jim Oscher, is affectionately known as Big Jim.
As some of you may know, my dad was recently diagnosed with cancer. On April 1st, 2025, he went in for a routine surgery to repair his rotator cuff. The procedure itself went well, but shortly after returning home, he began to get rapidly sick. A hospital visit soon revealed what none of us expected — two masses: one 12cm mass at the top of his right lung, and another 5cm mass on his stomach.
After extensive testing, we learned that it’s a carcinoma with sarcomatoid features — a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The good news, if there is any in this situation, is that it appears to be limited to those two masses, with no lymph node involvement. While the road ahead will be long and difficult, there is real hope in treatment.
On May 19th, my dad began experiencing severe breathing issues and returned to the hospital, and by May 22nd, he was finally able to start chemotherapy. If there’s one thing you should know about the Oscher family, it’s that we’re stubborn — and my dad is ready to fight this with everything he’s got. The current plan involves about a year of chemotherapy, with adjustments along the way as needed.
Beyond being a proud family man, my dad is also someone who loves adventure and experiencing the world. He and my brother have taken several incredible trips together across Europe, visiting places like Switzerland, Paris, Spain, London, and Ireland. They’ve shared stories of watching the Changing of the Guard, seeing the Eiffel Tower light up at night, exploring the streets of Barcelona, and enjoying pints of Guinness in a Dublin pub. Those trips created lifelong memories, and those moments of joy, discovery, and family connection are what we hold close to our hearts as he faces this next chapter.
Before all of this, my dad was — and still is — a die-hard Yankees fan. We’ve shared countless games together and even have a family group chat where we race to see who can call an Aaron Judge home run first. In late 2024, my brother, my wife, and I moved from Las Vegas to Michigan. While my dad was a little heartbroken by the distance, we were excited to visit ballparks all around the Great Lakes area together. We had plans to see the Yankees play in Toronto this year — but unfortunately, those plans are on hold for now.
My father is a husband, a dad to two boys, a proud father-in-law, a stepfather, and a grandfather. He’s the kind of person who never asks for help, but is always the first to give it. He’s the one you call when you need a hand, a laugh, or someone to just show up for you.
So with his permission, and my own stubborn determination, I’m reaching out on his behalf. It’s our turn to be there for him — to help ease some of the financial burden and make sure he can focus on fighting this thing with everything he’s got.
Thank you for reading, for sharing, and for supporting our family during this time. It means more than we can say.
