My name is Bianca Valisto, and I am the mother of Julio Angel Osif-Diaz. It is with unimaginable heartbreak that I share the tragic loss of my first-born son, Julio Angel, who was the victim of a senseless act of violence.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 18, at approximately 2:30am, Julio Angel and his friends were on their way home after celebrating his 22nd birthday. They had enjoyed a night filled with happiness, music, dancing and laughter with loved ones. On their way home they stopped for gas, never knowing their lives were about to change forever. Surveillance video shows that Julio was not acting aggressively. Instead, he was trying to calm a situation when his girlfriend and friends were confronted by 2 individuals. As the situation escalated and those around him were in danger, Julio bravely asked one of the men to "leave them alone.". The man responded by shooting Julio multiple times.

Even as Julio lay wounded, his girlfriend courageously shielded him, risking her own life in an attempt to protect him. Despite her bravery, the shooter continued shooting without regard to human life. At only 22-years old, Julio's life was taken far too soon. He leaves behind 5 sisters, one brother, his heartbroken mother, a grandmother, and much more extended family and countless friends who loved him deeply. Our family is devastated by this unimaginable loss. No family should ever have to celebrate a birthday one day then start planning a funeral hours later. Julio deserved to come home that night.
