The Association Karuṇā Sevena was started nine years ago, in 2011.
We came together as a group of Dhamma practitioners – mostly a core group of mums of, then, very young kids – who felt moved to study and practice with the venerable bhikkhunī Visuddhi. Our bhikkhunī was in the process of relocating to the Czech Republic after having spent the first ten years of her monastic life in Sri Lanka. We felt blessed by the opportunity to offer our long-term service and support.
The mutual giving and sharing has given us joy ever since. From its humble, unplanned beginnings, the Association became instrumental in the establishment of the monastic dwelling Ārāma Karuṇā Sevena. This is where our kind-hearted yet rock-solid in Dhammavinaya bhikkhunī lives as an alms mendicant. She follows the Theravāda monastic rule, compassionately taking all the troubles upon herself while being undemanding and unpretentious to all us.
Our community grew over the years as well as general interest in the Dhamma and meditation practice. Recently the Association has been overseeing the purchase and management of the lay residence Viveka House. This is a place for practitioners to experience deeper seclusion and learn from the venerable through daily contact and instruction in a spiritually held yet private, inconspicuous environment.
Our inner and outer premises reflect our refuge in the essential Buddha’s teachings, dedicated formal practice, cultivation of continuous mindfulness, service to the monastic community, and amity with our companions on the Path. For all these years since her return to Europe, our venerable has been continually available to everyone. Local and international people from all walks of life and backgrounds, all in need of a refuge, and seeking the Dhamma, have visited here.
While many come on go, the core group of supporters stays on, the practitioners who are mostly supported by her and her practice!
Our bhikkhunī’s heart is perhaps too big for her own good. Her generosity in sharing her time, space, teaching, in sharing her whole being in Dhamma, has set hard to match standards for us. Traditionally it is said that dhammadāna, the gift of Dhamma, excels all gifts. We have come to see this for ourselves, with our own eyes, in our own hearts. To us, bhikkhunī’s life is a shining example of the right practice for the benefit of both oneself and others.
Moved by and inspired by such an embodiment of generosity and compassion, despite some hesitation in asking, we reach out to you at this time. As mendicants who live dependent on the material support of the lay community, Buddhist monastics are among the most vulnerable at times of challenges and crisis. This is the case for our venerable. So we would like to ask all our donors and friends who were not too drastically touched by the current situation resulting from the pandemic to keep financially supporting our venerable bhikkhunī through the Association Karuṇā Sevena.

Our bhikkhunī went forth to realize the end of dukkha, Nibbāna. Our heartfelt wish is to facilitate the availability of supportive conditions for her practice for this to manifest in this very lifetime.

May our shared merit arising from supporting the venerable’s seclusion during the upcoming rains retreat lead us all to the eradication of all unwholesome states and the pure, supreme joy of Nibbāna!
