We rescued Betty from Last Hope Animal Shelter two years ago. She’s been through so much. Now, she’s in need of an unexpected, expensive surgery and we need to ask for help.
Betty’s Story: She was found wandering the streets in Tennessee with a shattered hind leg from a bullet wound. Rescuers brought her in and that leg was amputated. At the time, a line of mammary tumors down her chest were discovered and removed. Her rescuers suspected that she was a puppy mill breeder dog. The tumors were likely a result of birthing numerous litters. She was recovering in a shelter that was overfilled and had a euthanasia list. Last Hope goes down to alleviate those on the list. (We love you, Last Hope). Betty was transported to Long Island where she waited in the Last Hope shelter for 3 months. Here, they discovered that her heart was filled with worms. She was in the process of the heartworm treatment when we saw her. I fell in love instantly. The moment I saw her I turned to Sean and said, “What about this one?” They brought her out of the pen to interact with our kids. Remy was jumping up and down, so excited to meet her. This made her HAPPY, not overwhelmed. She remained calm and gave him licks. Clearly, she was meant to come home with us. Over the last 2 years, my kids have fallen in love.
Last week, a mass was found in one of her anal glands. Our vet cleared her glands and took a sample of the mass. This was not easy; both glands are impacted. Over the next 2 days at home, she gnawed at her behind relentlessly. On Sunday evening, I saw that she had gnawed a hole through her own skin. Her internals are exposed. It’s as gruesome as it sounds. She was in more pain that I suspected. I took her to the ER where we were given pain medication and an expedited date for surgery. In this surgery, the mass will be removed (and hopefully benign), both anal glans will be cauterized and the hole will be closed. The lower end of this surgery is shockingly $4,829. Unfortunately, we do not have this and are asking for any help that you might be able to donate to Betty’s surgery. Every dollar that is offered will go directly to the surgery. My family thanks you in advance for any amount that you may be able to pitch in. Much love, Betty Harris’ Family
