As some may know, my Mother, Betsy Sicard, was recently diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma of the Liver, a rare and aggressive cancer. She will be needing major surgery in the next 2-3 weeks at Mass General Sarcoma Center in Boston, being performed by 3 teams of doctors, after which she will be in the hospital for 7-10 days, with home recovery for 2-3 months, or longer if there are complications. The cancerous tumor is in the liver and invading the major blood vessel that carries blood to the heart and has entered the pericardium, which is the outer layer of the heart. Not only will they be removing a 1/3 of the liver, but they may also have to do open heart surgery to remove the tumor from the pericardium and resection/repair the major blood vessel.

During the months to follow her surgery, she will not be receiving any form of paid leave.
