Last Wednesday, Feb 25th, my dogs and I were hanging out in the backyard as normal. My Pitbull Mix loves to do laps in our yard and entice play with the other dogs. All of a sudden, he’s doing his usual laps around the yard and I hear a huge yelp. I thought he hurt his paw or something. I look down and immediately see red. I’m yelling for the other dogs to get inside, so I can figure out what happened. My Pitbull Mix, Bennie, somehow slightly skinned himself on the apple tree in our yard. I immediately call the veterinarian we go to. I’m sobbing so loud, but staying calm for Bennie. Bennie acted like nothing was wrong, like it was just another Wednesday. Such a brave boy. I rushed Bennie into our veterinarian—so thankful they could see us same day. He was assessed, then taken to the back to get sedated. I left while he got stitches. After that, we thought everything was going to be fine. There was a slight worry for necrosis, but we were going to wait it out. On Friday morning, we woke up to see that his surgery bodysuit, where the injury is, was covered in red fluids. I called the vet again and they told me to bring him in. His skin was beginning to drain due to the seromas forming—the body was trying to heal. There were multiple seromas, one even growing on his belly. Vet said it’s normal to see leakage and we have another visit come Monday. Over the weekend, this dog’s wound oozed so much fluid. Skin started to break apart and form gaping holes. It wasn’t even where the stitches were. I even called an ER vet to confirm I’m not losing my mind. I have never gone through this with a dog, so I don’t know anything. Well, then came today, our appointment at 1:40pm. Bennie had to be taken for another surgery to remove the dead skin tissue, reopen the wound to recirculate healing, and for an island bandage to be placed. He has to come in every other day for a bandage replacement, which is up to $250/visit. These bandage replacements will occur until there is a healthy skin barrier where we can stitch him back up to avoid infection and healthy healing. So you’re probably asking, why create this GoFundMe? Well, I lost my job a little over a month ago and I’ve been living off of my tax return while I wait to start my new job. This was all such an unexpected cost. I don’t have great credit, so loan options are thrown out the window. His first visit was around $1000, today’s surgery was around $1500, and now having to consider the bandage changes and restitching when healed. I’ve had Bennie since he was 12 weeks old. I have his face tattooed. He is literally one of my babies. I view my dogs as my children and that’s why I am trying to preserve his life. I just need help. And I never ask for help. So please, don’t even do it for me, do it for my Bennie and The Jets.
