Friday, 8/15, Beni’s whole world changed. Around 8:00 pm, our three pups went to the Carmichael dog park. Immediately when we got there, Beni started being harassed by a large dog. She would yip and growl, but he wouldn’t stop bugging her. Someone at the park had to pull said dog away from her, but he continued to go back. Not even 5 minutes into the time we were to spend at the park, the dog came back to Beni. He knocked her on her back and grabbed her. With a tooth in her chest and another in her shoulder, he picked her up and shook her around. He then set her down to grab her once again. He started to walk away, but thankfully a bystander got him off of Beni. The owner of the other dog did nothing. My dad yelled, "Get your dog!" and he didn’t. Beni ran away screaming and crying, trying to get out. At this point, we didn’t know the extent of her injuries. My dad rushed home, we put our other dogs in the house, and rushed to the ER vet. We got there around 9 pm. My dad was covered in blood along with the towel my mom was holding her in. The doctor took her instantly and started running tests. With a $200 entrance fee, we knew it would be a long night, but we didn’t know how long! We waited and waited for an update, and when the doctor came out, she said Beni had severe injuries and was a critical patient. We waited for another 6 hours to then be told the tooth from the bite had severed her pectorals. She could be in serious danger of infection, and we didn’t know if at this point she was going to make it or not. We talked about surgery and what had to be done. We got home at 4:00 am and discussed everything. We decided to transfer her to another hospital for care, where we found out that she has to be hospitalized for three days to maintain the wound and clear out all bacteria. She will be going into surgery on Monday, which could, depending on what the surgeon sees, mean having to amputate her front right leg. She could be in the hospital for up to another two weeks with an even longer recovery road ahead. Beni is the strongest, sweetest girl in the world, and to see her like this has traumatized our family in an unforgettable way. Beni was just trying to enjoy her Friday night at the park with her brothers, and no one deserves to end up like this. She needs help, so please let’s come together as a community to help her heal. Thank you so much!
