A Story of Resilience and Hope
Imagine being forced to flee your home, leaving behind everything you've ever known. This is the harsh reality for over 200,000 refugees living in Uganda's Nakivale Refugee Settlement.
Despite the unimaginable challenges they faced, Benedict Baraka and Mbilizi Kalombo are two extraordinary young leaders who refused to give up.
Benedict, a Congolese entrepreneur and community leader, fled the Democratic Republic of Congo with his parents in 2004. During his time in the Kyaka II refugee camp, Benedict demonstrated exceptional leadership and compassion. Notably, he founded a kindergarten in the refugee camp, which has since educated around 1,000 students per year. Over time, the kindergarten evolved into a full-fledged school, creating a lasting impact in the community.
Kalombo, a social worker and passionate environmental advocate, fled the Congo with his family at the age of 8. Despite the harsh realities of life in the Nakivale Settlement, Kalombo's determination and resilience earned him a bachelor’s degree in social work and social administration. A testament to his unwavering commitment to creating positive change, today, Kalombo is giving back to the Nakivale Settlement, dedicating his life to promote environmental conservation, biodiversity preservation, and poverty alleviation among his vulnerable communities.

One final note...
The graphic provided by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees is reflective of an official survey in 2022. Today, the increase in violent conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forces more Congolese to flee their homes. The Nakivale Refugee Settlement continues to receive new refugees at the rate of over 1,000 per month.
