Our much loved uncle and brother, Ben Atkins, has shown remarkable courage and strength since being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (ALS) on 2nd February 2024. With no cure for MND currently, this is devastating news.

Nineteen months ago, Ben and his wife Hayley sat in a consultant’s room and heard the words that would change their lives forever. Since then, Ben has bravely faced every challenge this cruel disease brings - from the gradual loss of his speech and the impact on his mobility, to the daily adjustments that MND brings. Despite everything, he continues to face each day with the biggest smile, strength, and an unbreakable will to make memories with those he loves most.

Rugby has always been a huge part of Ben’s life. A talented player, he began his journey at Monmouth Boys School before starting his career with Pontypool RFC before joining Bristol Polytechnic, where he studied construction and played in the back row for the first XV. He went on to represent Bristol Rugby and several Welsh clubs, including Pontypool, Abertillery, Newport, Rumney, Crawshays, and Abergavenny RFC, where he proudly captained the side to finish his playing career. During his rugby journey, Ben also spent time in Australia, playing for Manly Rugby Club and representing them on their tour of England and Ireland — an experience he often recalls with great pride and fond memories. Rugby shaped so much of who Ben is — resilient, team spirited, and full of heart — and through the sport he built countless friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

Beyond rugby, Ben ran his own commercial flooring business, providing for his family, employees, and supporting others wherever he could. Sadly, since his diagnosis, he has had to close the business as his condition progressed — adding to the emotional and financial strain he faces.

Now, as the reality of living with MND brings increasing challenges, this GoFundMe has been created to help raise funds for the needs Ben and Hayley have as his condition progresses, ensuring he can continue to live as comfortably and independently as possible.

Ben has always given so much of himself to others. Now it’s our turn to give back — to show him how deeply he’s loved, admired, and supported by everyone who knows him.
