Hi, my name is Melinda and my best friend Bec needs your help. Bec and her family were in Utah on vacation when Bec had an accident. Being so far from home means she was out of network for her insurance and with the ambulance, ER, surgery, and hospital stay in additon to her lack of being able to work is resulting in a financial crisis. Bec is the the most selfless person I know. She is a nurse, and if youve had family at one of the ICUs in Omaha..she probably watched over them. She also works at a camp for children with disabilities and is a mental health nurse too. This is devistating for her and while she hates asking for help...she needs it. Bec is currently staying with her parents but hopes to return home soon. She will be off work for a minimum of 6 weeks, and in addition to her medical bills she has to worry about the other bills associated with life.
Below is her account of that day.
Literally less than a minute after taking photos of me, the kids, and Joseph were taken... I did what I do best. The video of the landscape shows how far up we were that I had to be hauled down... in a sled basket... by a mountain rescue crew...
My poor family. Especially my niece, nephew, and my brother, and I think my sister-in-law. They all heard it snap. I didn't over the sound of my own scream, but I felt it. I laid there on the mountain for roughly 45 minutes to an hour, maybe, waiting for the first members of EMS to get to us because we were far into the national park. My dad, my brother, and my nephew took turns holding my hand and reminding me to take deep breaths for calm and pain control. Joseph, always prepared, had a first aid backpack, but even he was afraid to air splint the obvious deformity and just supported the leg while I laid there. So we waited patiently. My poor mother, who didn't hike up the mountain with us because of her knee and recent foot surgery, was left at the bottom imagining the worst, getting updated from the kids who ran back and forth, up and down, to keep her in the loop. My poor parents. I know they were beside themselves, especially my momma, who couldn't hike up to where I was and be with me while we waited. I can't imagine how torturous that was for her.
Once the first two members of EMS arrived and determined I was not getting off the mountain on my own accord, they called for a rescue team. And we waited some more. I got some fentanyl for the pain. And we waited. Then the rescue team came, and I got more fentanyl, and they attempted reduction up on the mountain because my foot was blue and my pain was getting worse with fentanyl. The first time didn't work, so we went for round two. Thank you to my dad and my sister-in-law who let me squeeze the shit out of their hands during that fun time. I was trying not to scream, so I squeezed because I didn't want my mom or the kids down the mountain to hear it. Then they splinted it... and hauled my ass down. IV antibiotics there in the ambulance because it was an open fracture. I think it was about two and a half hours from break to ER arrival.
Did a third reduction in the ER, and then emergency surgery. It went well. I have new plates and screws. Don't know all the details because I was out of it in PACU. Staying overnight for additional IV antibiotics and will discharge later today.
Non-weight bearing minimum 6 weeks. Oh... and of course I'm out of state. And OUT. OF. NETWORK. for insurance. Pray for me, but more importantly, please pray for my family. It was a long and difficult day for us all when none of us was in control.
