After years of managing type 2 diabetes, wife, mother, and cancer survivor Rebecca (Becky) Cox had a series of medical emergencies in late 2023 that led to nearly complete kidney failure.
After emergency treatment for organ failure, the long road of rehabilitation and learning how to live with and manage dialysis began.
For the first six months of this journey, Becky had to live far away from her home and family in Friday Harbor, including her husband Mike and beloved dog Figgy, in order to have access to necessary medical treatment, including hemodialysis, a process that takes hours to ensure her body didn't go into septic shock, sometimes up to three times a week.
Currently, Becky is back at home but is still doing daily at-home dialysis to compensate for the loss of kidney function.
In early 2025, after a long series of testing and interviews, Becky has been vetted and approved for a kidney transplant by the University of Washington!
This is a huge turning point in care for her condition, and while insurance is covering most of the procedures necessary, there is a great deal of ancillary cost and effort that come with this extensive transplant surgery.
- Becky and her husband Mike will need to be available to travel over 100 miles at a moment's notice for the organ transplant.
- They will both be required to stay in Seattle near the UW Medical campus for follow-up testing and post-operative evaluations for approximately 4-6 weeks.
- They will be away and unable to care for their home, and away from any source of income for this critical period of time.
We humbly ask our community to donate to help us build funds in anticipation of this major life event, and be a part of the final chapter in this long journey of healing.
Thank you!
