Lipedema is a very underdiagnosed genetic medical condition that affects 1 in 10 women. I got to be one of those lucky women.
After two years of fighting insurance for medically needed lipedema surgeries, I am finally approved for them, and need to have them all done by the end of the year. This means I will have four surgeries about 6-8 weeks apart. My first surgery, surprisingly, is happening quickly—May 7 is my surgery date. I am taking two weeks off work (not all paid) and then will be back, focusing on trying to get fully recovered in order to have the next surgery, and so on. Each surgery costs our family some financially. We’re having to hit my out of pocket total deductible for insurance, and there are other factors, such as units under each CPT code that my surgeon will have to submit after each surgery, and hope that insurance billing won’t kick back. My surgeries will take place in the Portland area, so there are some travel expenses, as well as expenses at home while I’m gone.
This is hard for me to ask for funds (if you know me at all, I don’t ask for help), but it is happening quickly and people have asked how they can help. This is one of the ways. I’m also asking for prayers. This is going to be a year-long journey of recovery for me. These funds will go towards travel, medical bills, and lost wages while I am off work.
