A few years ago I married David, who I met while doing YWAM in Peru, his home country. When we got married, we contracted a lawyer to work on my husband’s work permit/green card and so on. However, we weren’t very familiar with the legal process, and unfortunately the lawyer we hired apparently wasn’t either, because he wasted several years and thousands of dollars applying for processes and visas that we didn’t even qualify for. We could have been much farther into the process, but now we have to practically start over with the correct process, as well as fix the other lawyer’s mistakes, and in a much more dangerous political climate for immigrants.
We wanted to have the best chance of having a competent lawyer, and we were recommended one who has a very good reputation. However, with that reputation comes a much higher price tag. We have already contracted his firm, and our first payment was $8440, second payment $4220, and third payment will be $4220, plus there will be $1500 in filing fees. Several very kind individuals and our church were able to help us temporarily cover the first two payments, but in total we still need $16,860. I am happy to report that our experience so far with this lawyer has been everything we hoped it would be, and that they seem to be much more knowledgeable, competent, and dedicated than anyone we’ve worked with before.
We have started this fundraiser to help pay for this process, as it has become both urgent and also out of reach financially for us, and also to ask for prayer, for the process overall that our lawyers would have wisdom and do their work with excellence, and that God would guide and provide. Another prayer request would be for protection when it is time for my husband’s court date at the end of this month, or better yet, that we would be able to avoid going in person.
