Last night, 9/14, we returned from an evening at our neighbor’s apartment to find that our Beau had an anxiety-induced raid on our kitchen table. This included opening Hunter’s work bag to eat a chocolate granola bar, as well as ingesting about 20 pieces of sugar-free gum. Knowing dogs should never have chocolate, and that xylitol ingestion is a medical emergency, we rushed Beau to the ER. They induced vomiting and did see remnants of gum in the contents. However, with the amount he ate, they recommended he be hospitalized. Beau will have to stay in the hospital for the next 24-48 hours and be monitored, and even with this, the veterinarian made no promises that he would be in the clear yet. They are most concerned about his blood sugar dropping and his liver enzymes elevating. He is on continuous IV fluids and will be having his labs repeated a few times to check on his liver function. Vet visits are costly enough, but dealing with this financial blow immediately after getting married has been both emotionally and financially devastating.

Update: Beau is home and recovering well. His liver enzymes were still elevated but trending down when he was discharged. He went back for follow-up bloodwork and like before it was still high, but getting closer to normal. He will go back for another blood draw in a few days to make sure it’s continuing to go down while he recovers at home. Thank you everyone for your support❤️❤️
