Bear and I have been on quite the journey in the last (almost) 3 years since his Mama (Marisa/Ri) passed from stage 4 breast cancer. (F cancer!) We trauma bonded, quickly settled into the new apartment, Bear figured out he's now the king of the castle, we've made our way outdoors to explore the city (even camping in the mountains!), and mostly spend our time cuddling on the couch. He has been the very best emotional support pup one could ask for.
Recently, Bear underwent dental surgery, and as part of the pre-op process, his blood work revealed something we never expected—stage 3 kidney disease. While this diagnosis was a shock, the good news is that with the right interventions, Bear can still enjoy a good quality of life for another couple of years.
Over the last month alone, Bear's veterinary care has included blood work, allergy shots (every 4-6 weeks), vaccines, urine and kidney testing, his first weekly laser treatment, and dental surgery that resulted in 15 tooth extractions. Looking ahead, Bear will need ongoing weekly laser treatments, quarterly kidney function testing, and a new prescription renal diet to help manage his condition and keep him comfortable.
I promised Marisa that I would take good care of her "shmoopy," and so far we've had (mostly) smooth seas. But it truly takes a village—her village, our village, my village... all the villages. We would be so grateful for any help if you are able to support Bear's care. We also know it is a hard time for many right now, so there is absolutely no pressure for a financial gift. Bear also happily accepts visits and pets as a wonderful form of medicine for the soul if that interests you more. Thank you to everyone who has been on this journey with us over the last few years. We love you all.
