Update 12/18/25 2224
Basil had been making such positive steps for hours and was even starting to eat greens. Unfortunately, her repeat labs showed that her kidneys had not improved and her tummy was filling up again. She was in pain despite being on extreme pain meds. She was surrounded by her family and we said goodbye. Thank you to everyone who has been supportive.
Update 12/18/25 1218
Got a call from the vet, Basil's tummy has not filled back up in over 6 hours so that is a great start. She will need her kidney levels rechecked since they initially worsened during the hospitalization. Kidney functions typically improve with fluid therapy and hers worsened. One possible explanation is that her stomach was flipping trying to get rid of the blockage and cause blood to backup taking blood away from the kidneys and then causing the blood to rush back once the blockage was removed or she could of had a kidney infarction. Please keep her in your thoughts.
Update 12/18/25 0800
I got a call at 3am that Basil's belly started to fill back up and her kidneys were worse. She required another emergent decompression. She handled that successfully but was in a lot of pain. We tried different pain meds and medications to get her tummy moving.
Update 02/17/25 2014
Basil did amazing through her ex lap procedure. They were able to locate a blockage from where her stomach empties into the small intestine. The intestine was irritated but there appears to be no damage to the intestines and she did not require resections. The is on the road to recovery. She will remain in the hospital for one more day. The next 12-24 hours for her will be the most crucial for her recovery.
Update 02/17/25 1621
Basil's first surgery failed. She needs an ex lap to look for a blockage to see why things aren't passing. It is a very risky surgery with a hard recovery!
Update 02/17/25 1404
Basil required emergent decompression surgery. She is recovering very well right now. She will stay at least one more night in the hospital to make sure her tummy is emptying properly. If her tummy fills back up then she has a blockage that they would have to operate on.
Update 02/17/25 1231
Basil is having some positive progress. Her blood glucose is down and she is more comfortable and moving around and wants to eat hay but can't! Her stomach unfortunately is extremely bloated and will need decompression surgery. There are benefits and risks and if the bloating returns then she will have to have more of a surgery to look for a blockage.
Update:
Basil is in a lot of pain with abdominal distention. She is dehydrated. They are not able to do an ultrasound because of how swollen her belly is. She is getting aggressive pain medication and fluids to see if things can start moving along. It's looking more like a possible obstruction but there could also be some sort of torsion.
Hello, my name is Leracia (Bunslady). Basil is the world's best bun mom and she has suddenly fallen ill. She developed an acute onset of abdominal pain and was admitted to Evolution Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado, for bloating. Her bloodwork came back with liver enzymes that are 3x the normal limit, elevated white blood cells and no explanation for her symptoms. X-rays confirmed the bloating but cannot rule out a liver torsion or obstruction. She will need to undergo an abdominal ultrasound to rule out a liver torsion. I'm not sure what kind of other medical care she will need at this moment or if she will need surgery. The quotes for the hospitalization alone is in the thousands and does not include any other treatment.
She has 2 children and her husbun that need her. If you can, please donate to help cover the unexpected costs of this emergency visit. She has insurance; it will just help cover the out-of-pocket expenses that I need to pay. In order to provide her the medical care that she needs, I also have to pay off my balances to make room for more limits.
Thank you so much for all of your support. If you cannot donate, please share!
