Basant Mahmoud is my dear friend and coworker who recently experienced a life-changing accident. On Monday night, while biking home in Miami, Basant was struck in a motor vehicle accident and rushed to the ER in critical condition. She is now in the trauma ICU, receiving intensive care from a dedicated medical team. The suddenness of this accident has left all of us in shock. Basant sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, and her recovery will be long and complex. Healing will require extensive medical treatment and prolonged rehabilitation.

Basant came to the United States from Egypt on her own to pursue an academic opportunity, determined to build a better future for herself and her loved ones. She has always been a source of strength, compassion, and unwavering support to everyone around her. Now, she needs our help more than ever. As her coworker, I am helping coordinate this effort. The funds raised will be transferred to her family’s close family friend and designated proxy in Minnesota, Mr. Adel Ali Lotfy, who will then transfer the funds to her parents once they arrive. The funds will go toward medical expenses not covered by insurance, help finance her recovery and rehabilitation, and help cover her parents’ travel and living expenses while she is recovering.
