On September 28, 2024, Dachshund Rescue of Los Angeles sent me to San Jacinto Animal Shelter to pick up an emaciated senior with severe dental disease that could not walk due to "hip problems" and muscle atrophy. We later found that he has advanced kidney failure, deformation of the femoral heads inside the hip joint which handicaps him, arthritis in his back and hind area, and a severely infected and abscessed canine. He has incontinence issues that fluctuate in degrees.
The vets originally believed that he only had months left with us and there were times (like when he battled pancreatitis) where we were sure we would lose him, but this sweet old man shows us every day that he wants to live! Who am I - who are we - to tell him that he can't!?!
Right now, Barkley requires a mini dental for them to remove the abscessed canine as well as do what they can with his other teeth which is estimated at $1200 with his specialist vet. He goes in for bloodwork on April 1st to assess his stability for anesthesia with his vet that specializes in senior and fragile dogs. They require a $200 down-payment for a dental, but they won't be charging us for it until AFTER his bloodwork determines he's strong enough for anesthesia. He requires daily medication and supplements and is on a monthly arthritis injection.
DRLA has done a great deal for Barkley during the months he has been with me, but they lack the money and resources necessary, in general, to fully support all of the dogs that they have taken into their rescue which means that all of the dogs, including Barkley, have to go without. I've been asked directly by the rescue to fundraise for Barkley's necessities, so you may be rest assured that all donations will go strictly to Barkley.
Our goal is $1,700.
If you would like to donate directly to the veterinarian who will be doing Barkley's dental and future treatments, please feel free to pay by phone by calling:
