1/19/25 was the start of our journey and it has been a major roller-coaster ride for our family. Our mom Barb was taken to the hospital after 2 falls at home and this is where things took a turn.
After arriving at the hospital Barb was admitted for A-Fib (Atrial Fibrillation) After a couple days in the hospital they found blockages in both her Carotid Arteries, the right side 60% blocked and the left side 90%. Doctors ran further testing which ultimately concluded to the cause of her falls, a TIA (Mini Stoke) Barb was put on meds to help control the A-fib & blood thinners. She would need 2 surgeries to clear the blockages, starting with the 60% blocked artery. Her Dr. told us that could effect the function on the left side of her body and they hoped it would help her regain function so we could get her home. Sat. January 25th Barb had her 1st Surgery and it went well. It however wasn't enough to get her function back to where she needed to be so they made the decision to send her to the Nursing home for rehab.
Rehabilitation was slow going after surgery, but we were hopeful. Tues. February 3rd our dad got a phone call @ 10pm saying they were rushing mom up to the hospital by ambulance due to a serious and dangerous potassium level as a result in treating the dangerous levels her blood sugar plummeted to 34. After another admittance to the Hospital, & more testing, we got more horrible news not only did she end up with pneumonia and received iv antibiotic. Sadly there was more bad news they found a mass on her colon. Barb needed to have yet another surgery to remove it and to explore the area to see if it had spread to other organs, and/or tissues surrounding the mass. Feb. 8th she had the 2nd surgery, this too went well, they removed a golf ball size mass. Stage 3 A Colon Cancer was the final diagnosis.
Feb 12th Barb was sent back to the Nursing home for the 2nd time to again start her rehab. Progress was slow due to her being so weak and fatigued. Feb. 24th blood tests revealed her blood was dangerously low and requiring a blood transfusion. She was rushed back to the hospital after testing, an Ulcer was found at the surgical site where they removed the mass, the ulcer was bleeding and couldn't stop due to the blood thinners. The blood thinners were stopped for a week so she could heal and then resumed the med at a lower dose. After a long 9 week journey with nothing but setback after setback, on March 4th-5th she was discharged from the hospital to go to rehab.
So here we are asking for your help the insurance has quit paying for the Nursing home as of May 1st. Which runs $11,000+ a month that does not include PT. Our dad has also had to purchase some items (wheelchair, walker, and leg wraps) to help in her recovery. We're hoping to at least raise enough to cover those expenses $2500. We would love to get a little above that to cover the transportation $200 a trip and with chemo in the future there will be lots of Dr. visits.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and weather it monetary or prayer support all is greatly appreciated.
