This is for Barbara

As a lifelong friend of over 55 years, Barbara has been a caring, steady presence in my and so many lives- family, friends, coworkers, students. She has often been the one bringing friends together, and I know firsthand how kind, optimistic, and generous Barbara has always been. She has helped me personally through important career decisions and job placement, and she has given so much encouragement to others over the years. Now, Barbara is facing a heartbreaking medical crisis and needs the same support and compassion she has so freely given to others.

Barbara's Story

In May 2025, Barbara underwent aorta stent surgery. During the procedure, her femoral artery was cut, causing a massive hematoma that led to a spinal cord injury and partial paralysis. For the past year, Barbara has been unable to walk, get out of bed without help, or manage daily activities on her own. More recently, she also had to have her left big toe amputated. Medicare covers Barbara’s occupational therapy, physical therapy, and wound care through a home health agency, but it does not cover the daily aides she depends on for bathing, dressing, using the bathroom, and meeting her most basic needs. Barbara also needs medical supplies such as diapers and equipment to help with daily life. She needs a wheelchair van so her family can get her to her many doctor appointments. After paying her mortgage and utility bills, Barbara runs out of money each month and still faces the overwhelming cost of essential daily care and supplies.
